A Choir of Ill Childre. A Choir of Ill Children by Tom Piccirilli I've read, or attempted to read, several Piccirilli novels. The Night Class was fantastic. I couldn't get into Dark Father. Hexes was a mess. A Choir of Ill Children, however I'm not sure what to think. I liked it, but I didn't love it. Present tense always throws me, but I can get over that.

In this compelling Southern Gothic, Piccirilli (whose novel The Night Class has grabbed the Stoker for Best Novel) presents a searing portrait of twisted souls trapped in a wasteland. Tom Piccirilli's A Choir Of Ill Children rates high at the top of my "favorite books of the year" list. The strange story, bizarre characters, and intense atmosphere all cook up into a weird southern gumbo. Piccirilli's narrative style is powerful, poetic, dark, and so vital that you can feel the novel's blood, bone, and muscle on every page. A Choir Of Ill Children takes place deep in the superstitious bayou. It’s a degenerate world of swamp witchery, the ghosts and demons of family, and transcendent loyalty. It’s Piccirilli’s sense of place and characterization that impressed me.
